French Classes with Cécile

Cecile Besrest-Butler French teacher, Italian teacher and Spanish teacher

Cécile – your friendly teacher

I currently run French classes in Shipley, West Yorkshire. I also teach French via Skype in small groups or 1-2-1, as well as face-to-face tuition. Unfortunately, due to work overload, I am no longer offering Spanish, Italian and English as a Foreign language classes.

Group French lessons

If you live locally and you are interested in the French classes please contact me. Classes are £6.00/hour for group lessons. Lessons run term time only (Bradford school timetable). Classes are paid by the half-term up front. The price includes a summary video so that you can go over the lessons as many times as you need to – you also get written summaries of the lessons as well as a written exercise included for consolidation of learning. The written summaries mean you don’t have to make notes if you don’t want to. My previous students have found the videos to be extremely helpful and again I have made them informal (though packed with useful language) to help the points stick better. The videos and written summaries also mean that if you cannot attend a class you can easily catch up and not miss out!

If you would like to join a French class there is one on Tuesdays 1-2pm,  2-3pm & 3-4pm and on Thursdays 6-7pm &  7-8pm. Please let me know if you are coming so I can put out a chair for you. If none of these time suit you, you can put your name down on a waiting list for new classes. Contact me and sign up for the newsletter.

Lessons take place at the Kirkgate Community Centre in Shipley (opposite the Town Hall). There is some parking near by or you can park in Asda which is only 2 minutes walk away.

This is the right entrance.

39A Kirkgate, Shipley, Yorkshire BD18 3EH

Come to the door at the lower end of the street, opposite the Town Hall – we will be in Room 1 on a Tuesday and Room 3 on a Thursday (if the door isn’t open you can ring a bell and I’ll buzz you in).

I can’t wait to meet you!

Online language lessons

If you are unable to make any of the times above, or you prefer to learn from home at your own pace, I can send you the lessons (usually a video and accompanying summaries and exercises – sometimes it will be games and/or revision) to your email address. I charge £2.00/lesson. You can email me on cecilebesrestbuter at or use the contact form here.

Private language lessons

I can do 1-2-1 or small groups (maximum 5 people) of private lessons. I also teach Skype or Google Hangouts which means you can learn from the comfort of your own home or where ever you are in the world. Don’t worry if you have never used Skype or Google Hangouts they are straightforward once you know how and I can help with that. Private lessons are £30.00/hour (which can be divided between a few of you if you go in a small group).

My credentials

I am half French and qualified as a languages teacher in 1996 at Leeds University. Following teaching students in secondary schools, I worked for 6 wonderful years on EU projects promoting language learning and sharing teaching good practice with our colleagues in other EU countries where the emphasis was on how to motivate reluctant learners and ways to help those who found language learning a challenge. Over the last few years, I have been teaching adults in businesses, local groups and individual lessons taught via Skype.

Why do some adults find learning languages difficult?

I’m absolutely fascinated about how people learn (I have a Psychology and French degree from Aston University in Birmingham, UK) – Everyone knows that anyone can learn a foreign language because we already speak at least one language. However, there are often barriers that impede your learning as an adult such as being terrified of making a fool of yourself, bad experiences at school, too busy, too lazy and the list goes on. I have done all the hard work for you and put together a thorough programme. I have an informal approach and aim to make the lessons fun. I have broken down grammatical rules to make them much easier to understand and I give you tons of practice in conversational language so that what you are learning is practical and useful.

Discover a whole new way of learning a foreign language that will give you the chance to have meaningful conversations. Contact me for further information and sign up to the newsletter so that I can keep you updated and please take a look at the testimonials from students I have taught in the past.
